I was told recently, by a mom of three children, that parents lie when they say they don’t have a favorite child. I wonder if everyone who has multiple children feels the same. I only have one child so I don’t know for sure.
However I am a photographer with multiple clients! I definitely have favorites and this family is at the top of the list. I adore this family.
When I managed a photo studio in Chicago they were clients there, when their family was just beginning. It was pure coincidence that they relocated to Tucson around the same time I did. They called the Chicago studio for a reference for a photographer in Tucson and learned that I was here too. They have honored me with photographing their family ever since.
I have watched all of these children start as babies and grow into their expressive, comical personalities. I have also watched their mom and dad navigate the parenting ship with a down-to-earth perspective and a great sense of humor. They are “real”. They don’t take themselves too seriously. They are kind. They are generous. They are adventurous. They are creative. They appreciate photography and art.
I love getting their phone call each year for family photos! It doesn’t get better than this!
Do you ever take photos, but have one image that stays in your mind well after you? This is one of those images for me. Although I went there with the intention of taking beautiful pregnant portraits at sunset, I never knew it would be this good! The sunsets here are often incredible but it’s a roll-of-the-dice to find out if I will get one that is perfect. This happened to be a lucky day. The temperatures were cool, in comparison to the oven-like heat of the day. The pregnant momma was happy and comfortable enough to get just the right angle. Then the magic happened!
Soon after the sun fell behind the mountains, there was a beautiful golden light behind us that allowed for a few more minutes of shooting.
There is nothing like the mountains and sunsets in the southwest!

The new year is here, the holidays are behind us and it is time to catch up on things!
Last year flew by like no other year has for me. Being a new mom and keeping my photography lively and astir, made for a full schedule. With the help of my great clients, I made many remarkable images, but didn’t get a chance to show them off. I’m excited that things are calmer now, as the beginning of each year tends to be, and I have a little time to share some of these treasures.
In no particular order, I will present these sessions in the next few posts. I will begin with…
Lily, Class of 2014!
Tucson has so many nooks and crannies that make for great photo locations. I found a fun one for this senior portrait.
Lily & I were lucky enough to have a small audience, college kids I’m guessing, for a short while, who recognized a senior photo shoot in session, and hooted and cheered her on, in the most supportive way! She didn’t skip a beat, smiled back and kept rolling with the session.
Usually seniors are as excited as I am about photographing by the railroad tracks. I love the history, the ruggedness, the American-ness, as well as the visual dynamic of the lines that the tracks create and carry through the images. So I’m really into this grand idea of these beautiful images when Lily tells me she’s not quite as excited about it because her brother works for the railroad and it’s just kind of old-news to her. But she humored me and we did a few and she ended up choosing some as her favorites! Woohoo! I love it when my fun photo ideas turn into something that is (accidentally) loved. Thanks for playing along, Lily!

We did this engagement photo session during a cool AZ evening with the soft light of the setting sun. These two are hilarious and sweet all at once! They both have a great sense of humor and compliment each other perfectly.
They had some fun ideas they wanted to try out. It all worked fabulously!
The moments when they were just talking to each other and spending time together were when the magic happened.
I am so excited these two have found each other and will be sharing their lives together!
